“It’s really an impressive group but I think one of the most rewarding things is I’ve been able to work with some of what I believe is the best in the business, in the world of sports marketing. That’s what makes the fact she has an amazing team working with her so important. The team must create and print very precise maps for competitors and Miller says everything about the event is crafted to serve the experience of the competitors. There’s a safety team (safety is very important!) in addition to mechanics and multiple camps set up. Rebelle Rally employs a staff of 65 working for two weeks during the event. But it’s also doable for anyone regardless of your level, as long as you read the instructions, you dig down deep, you want it and you work hard. It is a very challenging, very tough event. “To create an event that wasn’t just seen as a women’s event that must be rally-lite or event-lite which was very important to me. Miller met with land management officials for over a year leading up to the first event, which was in 2016. The Rebelle Rally team created everything from a new type of scoring system to the marketing and business aspects of pulling off an event this massive. I had enough experience in life and the various jobs to kind of put it together. I was very fortunate that I had the background that I had. “A lot of people say ‘I want to do something like this’ and I say ‘more power to you.’ It was extremely difficult and challenging. The second annual Rebelle Rally takes place from October 12–21, 2017 and leads participates through over 2,000 kilometers of desert and trails beginning in Lake Tahoe, Califonia, and ending with an awards gala in San Diego, California the day after competition ends. I wanted something that was going to be really fun to drive. I wanted a really special platform but I also wanted an event that was kind of like a fusion or a hybrid of other events I’d done and competed in but with a really unique format. And really a test of your brain power and your communication skills and teamwork. But it is a true test of your endurance, mentally and physically. However, Rebelle Rally is more than a race, it’s an experience. “But I wanted to create something that women could really appreciate, that would challenge a really great, experienced competitor but would also be a great platform for women that didn’t have experience but were adventurous and wanted to learn.” But when you go to a motor sport event, often times it’s not necessarily designed - they’re not particularly welcoming to women. But it’s definitely not reflective of our population split between men and women. And the thing is, there are definitely more women who are actually competing and getting involved, etc. So when I started racing there really weren’t women out there. “I know what it’s like to be a woman out racing and driving and there are not as many women in the automotive industry. And sometimes, the events she had attended, didn’t have many female participants. ![]() Events similar to Rebelle Rally occur internationally, but there weren’t any in the United States. The creator of Rebelle Rally, Emily Miller, says that the inspiration for the event came from her passion for racing and adventure but also her experience coaching and working in sports marketing. But these skills are still relevant and as the first women’s off-road navigation rally raid in the United States, Rebelle Rally challenges participants to navigate over the course of 7 days using nothing but “old school” tools to reach checkpoints. For many of us, the days of paper maps and compasses are a distant memory. Like me, you might rely a little (ok, A LOT) on your GPS and phone to get to and from where you need to go daily.
